Portland trombonist Ixitikos Cortes is bringing his first published album to Farina. A triumph of alternative jazz fusion and personal exploration, Cortes has this to say about “7 Wheels of Me,” which is now streaming on all platforms:

“7 Wheels of Me” is an album I wrote during my 3rd year at PSU. Originally wanting to set myself apart from others when doing a recital, I thought, ‘why don’t I just write my own recital, have it the way I want?’ I was very tired of hearing standards as a way of ‘proving’ one’s talent to others. I started to think about what I wanted to prove to myself about my musicianship, what I can do, what make me stand out. At the time I was learning and experiencing different ideas of religion, beliefs, ideologies, learning about myself and what I wanted from those practices. Crystals and meditation were an easy gateway to a much larger tradition than I originally was aware of. And then I started learning about Chakras, and how Chakras influenced learnings and practices from the Middle East and how they are related to religious traditions today. Then I thought: Why don’t I write music to all of this that I’ve learned, what would that look like? Does theology intertwine with music? Yes, absolutely. The basic Chakra system involves 7 metaphysical wheels, each associated with a meaning, vibrating at a specific frequency. Music has its own vibration, and this idea helped guide my work.”

THIS EVENT IS FROM 8-10 P.M.

Andrew Jones on bass, Paul Moyer on piano, and Machado Mijiga on drums.

Since arriving in Portland in 2009, multifarious bassist Andrew Jones has been difficult to categorize. Equally at home in a free improvisation collective or accompanying a songwriter, Jones’ personal musical sensibility has become a mainstay across the city’s musical landscape. He’s also been traversing Europe, Australia and North America with artists like the critically acclaimed Julia Holter, Brooklyn art rock veterans Barbez, and DIY avant-pop power couple Teton. While his work as a session player, improviser, arranger, recordist, and mixer has appeared on dozens of records and hundreds of gigs stretching across a multitude of stylistic universes, Jones has also been crafting his own unique musical world with the electronically-augmented, lyrically-driven art songs of his projects and/or you and The Crenshaw.

Paul Moyer began his piano studies at the age of 5 and has been creating and performing music ever since. While at Enterprise High School in Redding, California, he participated in almost every ensemble offered in the school’s music program, including the award-winning vocal jazz choir ‘T.B.A.’ Paul received his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Lewis & Clark College. There, he studied piano under Dr. Susan DeWitt Smith and Randy Porter and served as a section leader for Cappella Nova, Lewis & Clark’s premier choir. Currently, Paul teaches and plays music across all genres in the Portland area.

Multi-instrumentalist and Portland native Machado Mijiga wears many hats, both literally and metaphorically. Classically-trained, jazz-weathered, and eclectically inclined, Mijiga left the proverbial creative “box” at a very early age, with access to many instruments and a diverse musical background brought about by an intercultural heritage. Mijiga is a musical polymath; composer, producer, bandleader, educator, gear fanatic, and audio engineer, to name a few. Authenticity and uniquity assume the locus of Mijiga’s artistic identity. Self-expression is the prime directive and the medium of choice changes like the weather.

Hank’s formal music education began in middle school. Later Hank went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts in music performance. Before turning in the direction of more contemporary jazz, Hank spent many years listening to classic jazz, where he was exposed to the giants of the jazz style.

This music has an infectious driving rhythm and incorporates most of the standard pop and jazz tunes of the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s as well as modern day compositions.
