Wen’ipt (Songs) is an Indigenous-led contemporary jazz combo that highlights Indigenous artistry through jazz. Wen’ipt showcases the largely forgotten, but significant, contributions to the art form by native peoples through performance of indigenous works from multiple eras, story telling, and by siply taking up space on the scene. Wen’ipt seeks to honor and carry on a long-standing tradition of indigenous peoples in jazz, from Charlie Parker (Choctaw), to Jim Pepper (Kaw/Mvskoke), and even contemporary artists such as Julia Keefe (Nimiipuu), Delbert Anderson (Navajo), and Mali Obomsawin (Abenaki).

Wen’ipt is led by the up-and-coming Baritone Saxophonist Orion White (Nimiipuu). Orion’s career may just be starting, but it has already taken him to massive stages, including the Kennedy Center and the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, and to festivals such as the Monterey Jazz Festival and Juneau Blues and Classics. These experiences have allowed him the chance to rub elbows with masters of the craft, recording with Marc Cary and performing with Esperanza Spalding. Orion is based in Portland, OR, and can also be found performing with the Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band and the funk-fusion ensemble No Soap, Radio.

Himacus Qeci’Yew’Yew (Thank you so much) for your support of Indigenous artists.

Saturday, July 26th - Machado Mijiga w/ DoubleDash

Seamlessly blending a myriad of styles, soundscapes, and instrumentation, creative eclectics Machado Mijiga (drums) and Dario LaPoma (keyboards) join forces to become the dynamic duo DoubleDash, bridging the worlds of electronic music and jazz. With influences ranging from Bjork to Beethoven, A Tribe Called Quest to Tribal Tech Tones, or John Coltrane to John Cage, DoubleDash pushes the boundaries of jazz music to new frontiers, breathing new life into the age-old duo configuration.

Multi-instrumentalist and Portland native Machado Mijiga wears many hats, both literally and metaphorically. Classically-trained, jazz -weathered, and eclectically inclined, Mijiga left the proverbial creative “box” at a very early age, with access to many instruments and a diverse musical background brought about by an intercultural heritage. Mijiga is a musical polymath; composer, producer, bnadleader, educator, gear fanatic, and audio enginerer, to name a few. Mijiga can be seen touring with GRAMMY-winning band, Portugal. The Man throughout the year, among the many Portland-based groups he leads and supports when back home. Authenticity and uniquity assume the locus of Mijiga’s artistic identity. Self-expression is the prime directive, and the medium of choice changes like the weather.

Dario LaPoma is a multi-genre pianist and composer living in Portland, Oregon. After studying Collaborative Piano at Lawrence University in the Midwest, Dario returned to Oregon and is currently an activer member of the music community, known for his tenure in bands led by the northwest luminaries Lady Rizo and Joe Kye, as well as other jazz, hip-hop and cross-over ensembles throughout the region. Dario released his debut album of original music, SWEPT, in the winter of 2020, and he looks forward to releasing new collaborative projects this year.

Friday, July 11th - An Evening with HANK BILAL

The BIGGEST NIGHT OF MUSIC that Farina has booked to date. GRAMMY-nominated trombonist Hank Bilal was born in Winnsboro, South Carolina into a musical family where his uncles on his mother’s side all played instruments and his father played drums professionally. As with many of our southern-based musicians, Hank Bilal started in church, in the youth choir. And at home there was always the music of gospel greats being heard, like The Canton Spirituals, Mississippi Mass Choir, John Pee Kee and The Winans, to name a few!

Hank’s formal music education began in middle school. Later Hank went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts in music performance. Before turning in the direction of more contemporary jazz, Hank spent many years listening to classic jazz, where he was exposed to the giants of the jazz style.

Hank Bilal has shared a performance platform with many great artists, from performing on the GRAMMY awards with Aretha Franklin to Gerald Albright, Chaka Khan, Christopher William, and the Clark Sisters! Beyond being a veteran trombonist, the GRAMMY-nominated artist is also fluent in other performing areas as a pianist and singer, and with other brass instruments!

Hank is also an accomplished music producer - his catalog of produced albums includes The Black Aquarius, Brassential Elements, A Bona Fide Christmas, and Beneath the Covers, which features some of the best in smooth jazz! Hank is also an educator, and has been teaching grades Pre-K through 6th grade at the Martin de Porres Catholic School since 2015. In addition, he serves as an active member of various community service groups, Alpha Phi Alpha, and Kappa Kappa Psi.

Friday, July 4th - The Djangophiles

David Stassens on lead guitar, Hyung Nam on rhythm guitar and Pete Lampe on bass.

The Djangophiles’s is, of course, their namesake… the great Belgian/French Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. Django Reinhardt has astounded and thrilled numerous generations of guitar players and jazz lovers with his amazing command of the guitar. Together with Stephane Grappeli they formed the famous “Hot club of France” in 1934, and, based on the Gypsy jazz guitar stylings of Django, a whole new style of jazz was developed called Le jazz hot. This music has an infectious driving rhythm and incorporates most of the standard pop and jazz tunes of the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s as well as modern day compositions. The Djangophiles, in keeping with the tradition of the music, use only acoustic instruments, and use sound reinforcement only when absolutely necessary… The result is a comfortable listening level that is never too loud or intrusive, but is always artistic and delightful.
